This process happens extremely slowly, often over millions of years, and shifting conditions during growth are what create the natural color zoning and transitions seen in each stone. Part of the stone is a very pale, soft aquamarine blue with creamy, more opaque inclusions, while another area has this beautiful bronze brown color with tiny darker flecks. In shadow, those brown areas can look deeper and more opaque, but when the light hits them, little flashes of color appear.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe stone is translucent and rose cut, so it is faceted across the top and flat on the back. I knew from playing with it that it looked amazing over bright silver, so I kept the pendant design fairly simple and set the stone over a highly polished, heavy silver back plate. Light can travel through the aquamarine, reflect off the polished silver underneath and come back through the stone, which really makes it light up and glow as you move it.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI created the back plate from melted silver that I forged, milled and hammered into shape. Both the stone and the silver have an organic, asymmetrical shape, and I liked having a little extra silver visible around parts of the stone rather than trimming everything away. I used line stamps to add small flourishes and a sunburst inspired pattern across the top and along one side. The hammered bail adds another simple handmade detail without taking attention away from the stone.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eOnce I finished the pendant, a standard thin chain just did not feel right with it. I wanted something more substantial, so I decided to make the entire chain by hand. I formed tiny 5 mm rolo links from heavy half round Argentium sterling silver wire, assembled them individually and permanently welded every link closed.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThis was a challenge for me because these are about the smallest links I can make and still individually assemble and weld. I normally work larger, so creating this chain required quite a bit of magnification and was very time consuming. The half round wire gives each link a flat inner edge and a rounded outer surface, which catches the light differently than a chain made from simple round wire. There is something about the horizontal banding that almost looks like a distant horizon line.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWhat makes these two necklaces especially unusual is that the stones started as a matched pair. They were cut from the same material and opened up to create mirror images of one another. I originally began making them into earrings and created matching settings with gemstone dangles, but once I got further into the design, I realized they were going to be too heavy for earrings. Instead, they became two individual necklaces. The colors, dangles and construction match, but each is the mirror image of the other.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI kept the bezel setting fairly simple because I wanted the agate to remain the focus. The back is completely open, so you can also turn the pendant around and wear the reverse side facing forward. I also created small sections of heavier chain using square sterling silver wire formed into oval links. I love how the square wire and cube shaped gemstones quietly play off the square shape of the main stone.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe chain continues the asymmetrical feeling of the pendant. Both sides contain the same elements, but I reversed their placement so the design is balanced rather than perfectly symmetrical. The pendant is also able to slide freely between the first stations on either side rather than being fixed exactly in the center. As you wear it, things shift slightly and sometimes one side sits a little lower than the other. It was large enough to really show off the organic openwork and thick, dimensional areas of silver, so I knew I wanted to turn it into a statement ring.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI added hammered texture to the silver along with the apatite and several melted silver balls. I also oxidized the finished ring and polished the raised areas again. On one side, the two bands spread apart with approximately 10 mm of open space between them, creating a wide shape that really hugs the finger. I really love the way those facets play with the natural blue flash as the ring moves and the light hits it from different angles.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI created a sterling silver disc for the moonstone to sit on and hammer textured the surface with a radiating pattern around the stone. I also added small clusters of melted silver balls for a little more texture and dimension.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI gave the entire ring a high polish first, then oxidized the silver and polished the raised areas again so the darker oxidation remains primarily in the recessed details. I especially love oxidation with rainbow moonstone because that dark contrast makes the blue flash look even more vibrant. It also brings out all of the hammered texture and dimensional details in the silver.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI put a lot of thought into how this ring would feel on the finger. The base hugs the finger like a comfortable, substantial band, and then I built the design dimensionally above it using several silver shapes. It gives the ring a really nice presence from the top while still feeling incredibly comfortable to wear.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI actually have this same ring design with a different stone in my own jewelry collection, and it is possibly my most worn ring. There is something about the way it sits on my finger and catches the light that makes me reach for it all the time.
