Blue Topaz Pendant on Linked Stone Chain

This one-of-a-kind London blue topaz necklace pairs a deep blue rose-cut pendant with a handmade blue-green indicolite tourmaline chain for a beautiful play of color and sparkle.

I thought this London blue topaz was just beautiful. It’s a really deep blue rose-cut stone, which means it is checkerboard faceted across the top and flat on the back. Because of that flat back, I set it over a highly polished sterling silver back plate. The light shines through the stone, hits the polished silver underneath, and reflects back through, giving that deep blue color so much life and a beautiful glow and sparkle as you move it around.

I created the back plate from heavy sterling silver and hammered around the rim, which gives the silver surrounding the stone some sparkle as well. When I finished the pendant, I thought it would look beautiful with something besides a plain silver chain. I had these tiny blue-green indicolite tourmaline stones and loved the way their color played against the deep London blue topaz, so I wire wrapped them with tiny sterling silver links in between to create the chain. It has almost a station-necklace feel, with little pops of blue-green color going all the way around.

The pendant comes easily on and off the chain, and the large solid sterling silver bail gives you the option of wearing it on another chain as well.
