Sterling Silver Sculpture Ring

This one of a kind ring combines sculptural openwork, hammered texture and oxidized Argentium sterling silver in an organic everyday design.

This ring started with melted silver and a process that is very serendipitous. I cannot completely control the way the silver moves and joins together as it melts, and honestly, it does not always turn into something I want to use. I just kept experimenting with the process, and this particular piece came out so beautifully that I did not even want to add a stone to it.

The melted silver created an organic openwork pattern that almost reminds me of filigree. I love the contrast between the open spaces and the areas where the silver is thick, dimensional and substantial. I continued working into the piece with hammered texture and added melted silver balls to bring in another shape and texture.

I polished the ring, oxidized it and then polished the raised areas again. The darker oxidation settles into the recessed areas and really brings out all of the different elements, from the hammer marks and open spaces to the smooth silver balls and heavier areas of melted silver.

I also love how this ring feels on the finger. It has a substantial 24 mm presence across the top, but gradually tapers toward the back so it hugs the finger and feels really comfortable to wear.

This is one of those rings I could see wearing constantly. Without a gemstone or a lot of color to work around, it feels incredibly versatile. It would look just as good with jeans and a T shirt as it would dressed up, and all of the organic silver work gives it plenty to look at on its own.
